Exploring Risk and the Role of Actuaries with AI
A career in actuarial sciences provides a lot of opportunities, high salary and the chance to make a difference. But most young people don’t even know it’s an option. That’s why the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA) is trying to reach students before they reach post-secondary.
Being an actuary is not top-of-mind or easy to understand for most teens. As part of their student-focused website, AllAboutActuaries.ca, we built a chat module that integrates AI to engage students on topics that may pique their interest while at the same time explaining how actuaries think about risk.
Built using ChatGPT and our in-house digital expertise, the AI module is a tool for teachers, guidance counsellors and other student influencers to help bright students explore what being an actuary means. The module invites them to pick a topic to explore from a set list of interests such as cyberbullying, electric cars, junk food, anxiety, climate change, the Metaverse and, yes, AI. The module helps them to explore possible risks associated with one of these interests, chatting back and forth to cover several different angles. Eventually, it guides the discussion towards the subject of actuaries and what they do, with the option to learn more.
The overall goal of the website is to spark an interest in students who like solving problems, with the hope they will keep an open mind and learn about a career path they might not otherwise know about — and hopefully keep taking math.
It was an interesting challenge working with AI to create something new and solve a problem for the CIA. It’s what we love to do. If AI integration or a marketing challenge with a niche audience is in your future, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
