Capital Rainbow Refuge

Sharing our freedom  with LGBTQ+ refugees

Challenge

In more than 60 countries, LGBTQI+ people are criminalized and face unimaginable human rights violations. Capital Rainbow Refuge has helped hundreds of refugees flee persecution. But with LGBTQI+ rights being threatened right here at home, our own freedoms cannot be taken for granted, and it can be hard to focus on international issues.

Solution

We wanted Canadians to recognize that we have the power to share our freedom with others, and that with each person brought to safety by CRR, the LGBTQI+ community gains a unique and powerful voice. We launched the “Share your freedom” campaign to help spread the word, including a video showcasing real LGBTQI+ refugees talking about the freedoms they’ve started to enjoy since arriving in Ottawa.

Outcomes

  • The campaign raised the profile of Canada Rainbow Refuge at Capital Pride
  • Website traffic (220%) and donations (238%) both more than doubled
  • Campaign was extended to their signature fundraising event: The Freedom Soiree

We’re excited to tell our story in a new way, through the words and stories of the real people we are helping. We just want people to think, maybe you can’t stop human rights violations halfway around the world, but you can change lives in a very real way right here in our own community.
